MSc Thesis

Artificial Intelligence techniques to support monitoring of infrastructures for Network Function Virtualization (NFV)

This thesis project has been realized by Dawit Mezemir Anelay in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the MSc in Computing Science at University of Pisa, under the joint supervision of Tommaso Cucinotta (Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna) and Davide Bacciu (University of Pisa).

The work supports the transition from physical appliances to cloud-native virtual machines and containers through AI methods for performance monitoring, troubleshooting, and capacity planning in telecom NFV infrastructure.

Requirements and benefits

Strong C/C++ and Python programming, fluent Linux command-line and Bash scripting, and good operating systems and virtualization knowledge were central to the work.

The project provided direct experience with real Vodafone operational data and innovative technologies for cloud and NFV operations.

Industrial collaboration

This thesis proposal is framed in an industrial collaboration with Vodafone involving RETIS, INRETE, PERCRO, and ICT-COISP labs of Scuola Sant'Anna plus international Vodafone capacity-management teams.

PostgreSQL major version upgrade on Azure Flexible Server

Led the upgrade from PostgreSQL 13 to 16 including cleanup, extension removal, replication slot management, PITR testing, and post-upgrade checks.

Data security

Customer Managed Key implementation in Azure

Created and managed CMKs in Azure Key Vault and automated key lifecycle and permission configuration using Azure CLI and Terraform.

Observability pipeline

Kubernetes event monitoring with Elasticsearch and Kibana
